Seerah 022 – Prophetic Stages of Dawah in Mecca and the Early Converts

Seerah 022 – Prophetic Stages of Dawah in Mecca and the Early Converts

Phases and Stages of The Call:

The Prophet’s Call (Dawah) could be divided into two phases distinctively demarcated:
1. The Meccan phase: nearly thirteen years.
2. The Medinan phase: fully ten years.

Each of the two phases included distinctive features easily discernible through accurate scrutiny into the circumstances that characterised each of them.
The Meccan phase can be divided into three stages:
1. The stage of the Private Call: three years.
2. The stage of the open proclamation of the Call in Mecca (Public Dawah): from the beginning of the fourth year of Prophethood to almost the end of the tenth year.
3. The stage of the call to Islam and propagating it beyond Mecca by seeking an alternative base for Islam (Nusrah): it lasted from the end of tenth year of the Prophethood until Muhammad’s* emigration to Medina (Yathrib). The Medinan phase will be considered later in its due course inshaAllah.

The stages of dawah are few, each is a legitimate stage for any Muslim community:
1. Private dawah - let the public status quo remain. This was the first 3 years.
2. Just preaching with the tongue and no military / physical action. Even if they harm you, the command was not to retaliate. This was 10 years of dawah for the Prophet*. To the extent of multiple killings and multiple assassination attempts - even if they kill one of us, we cannot touch one of theirs.
3. Seeking physical support to establish Islam (Nusrah) as a way of life through allegiance of the people with power and influence and carrying public opinion. In this phase there are distinct levels of Dawah (according to some scholars) with are under the control of the Amir al-Mumineen:
i) Dawah with the tongue along with physical fighting. The Muslims thus fought only the Quraysh of Mecca - no other tribe. This happened for the first 6 years after the hijrah. So open dawah along with military confrontation.
ii) Open dawah to all with honour - you have political power but you only attack in defence if you need to. You don't utilise it for military power or expansion. This happened in the Madinah stage after the treaty of Hudaibiyah after the conquest of Mecca.
iii) Open dawah along with physical confrontation to anyone who opposes the spread of Islamic Dawah. This was stage the Prophet* passed away upon. That he was sending out armies to i.e. the Romans etc. And the sahaba continued on this stage which is why they took over nearly the whole known world. They conquered Persia, most of the Roman empire, Egypt, North Africa.

The First Stage

Strife In The Way Of The Call - Three Years Of Private Call:

It is well-known that Mecca was the centre for the Arabs, and housed the custodians of Al-Ka‘bah. Protection and guardianship of the idols and stone graven images that received veneration on the part of all the Arabs lay in the hands of the Meccans. Hence the difficulty of hitting the target of reform and rectitude in a place considered the den of idolatry. Working in such an atmosphere no doubt requires unshakable will and determination, that is why the call unto Islam assumed a clandestine form so that the Meccans should not be enraged by the unexpected surprise.

The Early Converts:
The Prophet* naturally initiated his sacred mission right from home and then moved to the people closely associated with him. He called unto Islam whomsoever he thought would attest the truth which had come from his Lord. In fact, a host of people who nursed not the least seed of doubt as regards the Prophet*, immediately responded and quite readily embraced the true faith.
That is he preached to his friends and family. The first revert was Khadija which shows how much faith she had in the Prophet*. She converted without even knowing. The second was Wariqah ibn Nawful. He converted without even saying the shahada and died with Islam without ever praying / fasting.
The third is either Ali, Abu Bakr or Zaid. One of the easiest to resolve is: first child was Ali, first adult man was Abu Bakr and first freed slave was Zaid. As for Ali there is no question because he is being raised by the Prophet* and Khadija themselves in their household. At this time he was around 10 years old. When Abu Talib had Ali, the Prophet* offered to take care of Ali as Abu Talib was very poor. So Ali was raised in the house of the Prophet*.
And then of course Zaid whose story we went have already covered.
Then the conversion of Abu Bakr: when the Prophet* presented Islam, he converted instantly. In a hadith, once when the companions began to argue the Prophet* said to Umar, "Allah sent me with the truth, and all of your accused of me lying but it was only Abu Bakr who said you are telling the truth". In another hadith, "there was not a single person who accepted with doubt except for Abu Bakr". Thus we see Abu Bakr was the best of companions. The Prophet* said "Allah has chosen me as a kaleel - but were I to choose a kaleel it would have been Abu Bakr". The only sahabi to be mentioned by name is Zaid in the Qur'an. The other sahabi that is mentioned is Abu Bakr - when Allah says "when the TWO of them is in the cave". So Allah called him "the second of the two". That is, second to none but the Prophet*.
Abu Bakr proved to be an energetic and most zealous activist. He was wealthy, obliging, mild and upright. People used to frequent his house and draw nigh to him for his knowledge, amity, pleasant company and business. He invited whomever he had confidence in to Islam and through his personal efforts a good number of people converted to Islam. The next batch of converts were all converted by Abu Bakr:
1. Sa`ad ibn Abi Waqqas
2. Uthman ibn Affan
3. Zubayr ibn al-Awam
4. Abdur Rahman bin Awf
Sa'ad was the youngest, around 16, and he was from a great family of the Quraysh. His mother threatened him, tried to torture him etc. She then used emotional blackmail "I will stop eating and drinking if you don’t worship idols. And I will die a painful death in front of you". He tried to convince her but she withered away and on her deathbed until Sa'ad became very emotional "I swear by Allah I will not give my religion up no matter what you do - even if I had 100 lives and in each life I saw you die I will not go back to worshipping idols". When his mother saw this determination, she broke her fast and started eating again. In response to this Allah said "if they force you to try and worship idols, don’t listen to them but be good to them".
Sa’ad is the first person to throw a bow and arrow for Islam. He is the only person where the Prophet* said to him "may my father and mother be given to you in ransom". The Prophet* never said this to anyone. This is a huge honour. And he was chosen in the Shura, Umar on his deathbed said "I will choose the only people I am sure the Prophet* was happy with him, the first was Sa'ad".
Uthman was also in this Shura and there are blessings associated with him that we will cover in more detail later (InshaAllah) – including the fact that the Prophet* married two of his daughters to Uthman and the Prophet prophesised he would be Khalife and he should remain steadfast. We have also covered Uthman’s importance in compiling a standardised Qur’an.
Zubayr ibn al-Awam was the third convert - a direct cousin through the aunt of the Prophet*. His mother is Saffiyah bint Abdul-Muttalib. He is the son, brother and father of a sahabi. The Prophet* said "every prophet has been given a special friend/disciple [Hawarin], my friend is Zubayr".
Abdur Rahman who was very wise and honest in his business. He is the famous one who had to give up all of his belongings to Quraysh when he left Mecca. And he came to Madinah with just the clothes on his back. He took some butter and started selling etc until he became a rich businessman again who lived a long and noble life. He turned down the offer from his ‘brother’ of the Ansar of a garden / house floor and wife !
All of these are from the Quraysh and are noblemen who all have prominent lives in Islam. Every one of these early converts became a legend.
The next companion to convert was Abdullah ibn Masud. He was the first to convert not of the nobleman of the Quraysh. He wasn’t noble nor was he a slave - he was in the middle. And he said "one day I was with my flock and I saw two men. I didn't know who they were... they said "oh young man, we are thirsty can you give us some milk?"." Ibn Masud said "this milk isn't mine to give I cannot give it to you". So the Prophet* said "show us a she goat that stopped producing milk". And then the Prophet* rubbed the goat and started producing milk. And so Ibn Mas'ood is astonished, he is seeing a miracle - and he converts right there and then. He is the one where the Prophet* said "if you want to learn the Qur'an, read it like Ibn Masud". He said "I learnt over 70 surahs directly from the Prophet* ".

Seerah 21: Post-Revelation Uncertainty

Summary of Study Circle from 13 November 2016:

Status of Khadija (ra)

We talked last week about some of the benefits of Allah choosing Khadija to be the companion of the Prophet*. She is one of the four greatest women ever (according to the hadith) and provided unstinting and constant support for the mission of the Prophet and his dawah. She provided emotional, physical and financial support to the Prophet. The other greatest women – all have a relationship to a Prophet / Messenger (mother, bringing them up, wife and daughter) give an insight into what values are important in Islam – are:

1. Maryam (mother of Isa)

2. Khadija (wife of Prophet Muhammed)

3. Aasiya (brought up Musa in the House of Pharaoh)

4. Fatima (daughter of Prophet Muhammed)

*Second Revelation*

After ‘IQRA’ the Prophet* stopped getting revelation. Ibn Abass says the Prophet* would wonder Mecca and its valleys wanting to see Jibraeel AS again. Some scholars say 40 days others say a few months. Then the Prophet* was caught in a sort of depression coupled with astonishment and perplexity. Al-Bukhari reported:  The Divine inspiration paused for a while and the Prophet* became so sad, as we have heard, that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains, and every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Jibraeel would appear before him and say: “O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah’s Messenger in truth,” whereupon his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and return home. Whenever the period of the coming of the Revelation used to become long, he would do as before, but Jibraeel would appear again before him and say to him what he had said before.

Jibraeel Brings Allah's Revelation:

Ibn Hajar said: ‘That (the pause of Allah’s revelation for a few days) was to relieve the Messenger of Allah* of the fear he experienced and to make him long for the Revelation. When the shades of puzzle receded, the flags of truth were raised, the Messenger of Allah* knew for sure that he had become the Messenger of the Great Lord. He was also certain that what had come to him was no more than the ambassador of inspiration. His waiting and longing for the coming of the revelation constituted a good reason for his steadfastness and self-possession on the arrival of Allah’s inspiration, Al-Bukhari reported on the authority of Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that he had heard the Messenger of Allah* speak about the period of pause as follows: “While I was walking, I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up, and surely enough, it was the same angel who had visited me in the cave of Hira’. He was sitting on a chair between the earth and the sky. I was very afraid of him and knelt on the ground. I went home saying: ‘Cover me …, Cover me …’. Allah revealed to me the verses (from surah Mudaththir):

“‘O you [Muhammad*] enveloped (in garments)! Arise and warn! And your Lord (Allah) magnify! And your garments purify! And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)!’” [74:1-5]

After that the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly. The scholars say one wisdom for this pause was to prepare him for the second reunion. To recollect his energy and make him feel enthused. But despite this preparation he still became terrified when he saw him. All of this shows us the humanity of the Prophet* - we find a human reaction to these supernatural events and one that is sincere.

The revelation occurred in the house of Khadija RA. This shows Jibraeel AS followed the Prophet* back to the house and then said:

- "Oh you who is clothed" - meaning "Oh you who is living in comfort and ease, stop this life of ease, stand up, be active, leave this sheltered life AND go out and warn the people."

- "While you are doing this, praise Him and glorify your Lord".

- And "Make sure you're garments are clean - make sure you have a pure soul and a good soul.

- And as for idols, get rid of them and leave them".

- "Don't remind people of the favours that you've done". This is important because Allah is saying when you do good, don't do it to get the favours back from people or be repayed back. Again this goes back to sincerity - do things only for the sake of Allah.

- And the last ayah Jibraeel AS revealed was "for the sake of your Lord, be patient". This shows that there WILL be calamities and troubles but be patient.

Some scholars came he became a Nabi with Iqra. When he got second revelation, he became a Rasul.

Nabi vs Rasul (Prophet vs Messenger)

What is the difference between them? There are four main opinions:

1. One group of scholars say there is no difference. They are synonyms.

This is not the strongest opinion a verse in the Quran states "We didn’t send before you either a Rasul or a Nabi except that..." Hence – not the same.

2. A Nabi is one who is inspired by Allah with a revelation but not called to preach it.

Whereas a Rasul is told to proclaim it to mankind. This doesn’t make sense either as prophets have to preach and spread the Word and it is a sin for prophets to conceal the knowledge. The Prophet* said "I saw all of the prophets and there was a Nabi with a large group, few people, 2 people and no one".

3. A Rasul is someone who has been given a new shariah. A Nabi follows the shariah of the Rasul before him.

It seems to be good but it doesn’t match up to all of the examples: Dawud & Suleiman followed the shariah of Musa, despite Dawud being given the Psalms (Zabur). Adam was the first Nabi and Nuh the first Rasul. Other Rasul included Younus and Yusuf. Idris was before Nuh but only a Nabi.

4. The correct opinion seems to be that a Nabi is sent to a people that accept him as a Nabi whereas a Rasul is rejected by the people or is sent to different peoples.

The linguistic meaning can highlight this difference - Nabi comes from naba'a which means information. So a Nabi informs and preaches and teaches - he gives information. He speaks to you a message form Allah. A Rasul comes from arsala rasoola which means to send, so a Rasul is sent to a nation that does not believe in him. Whereas a Nabi teaches to a people that already accepts him. Nuh, Dawud, Sulaiman they were sent. They established kingdoms. Other examples: Isa and Yahya - one was a Rasul, the other a Nabi because they accepted Yahya and rejected Isa.

Generally every Rasul has a new shariah (there are some exceptions as we have mentioned above). The Prophet* said "there were 310 and something Rasuls and 124,000 prophets". Thus we can see every Rasul is a Nabi, not the other way around. Out of the Rasul, they are the elite Rasul - Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Muhammad – peace be upon them all.

What is the purpose of prophets?

Why do we need them? We covered this topic when we discussed the Belief Pathway and introduction to the Stories of the Prophets.

This is the difference between us and the West. Throughout all of human history until the last few hundred years every society has believed in a higher power that is the ultimate Law-Maker, but the modern Western societies believe they will find their own way in life (man-made law = democracy) but we believe the best law of the law of Allah sent through the prophets. Allah knows what is best. This is why He sends Prophets - to deny Allah sends prophets is to deny the Mercy and Power of Allah. It’s insulting to Allah and He says "they did not give the respect that is due to Allah when they said Allah does not reveal anything to mankind".

Anyone sincerely searching for the Truth, to answer the 3 fundamental questions (where did I come from, what happens when I die and what is the purpose of my life) will always come to the conclusion that they are created by a more powerful being and the person must then define his relationship with this Creator and will get that from the Books sent by the Creator and he will realise that only the Quran is a living miracle.

The Afterlife (Akhira) Series

Paradise and Hell

We started off with a recap of our souls created, conceived, born in this life, through death, life in the grave to be resurrected for the Day of Judgment leading to the final Judgment and then crossing the Siraat Bridge to its final sphere of existence.

Our soul (ruh) will continue to exist for all eternity since it has been created. Currently it has life, then experience ‘death’ but will still exist in the Grave and be resurrected after the end of the world on the Day on Judgment, before finally living out FOREVER in Paradise (InshaAllah) and the others may taste Hellfire or live there forever.

Remember what ‘A`isha said: “If the first thing revealed in Qur’an was ‘do not drink’, the people would have said ‘we are never going to stop drinking.’ And if the first thing that was revealed in the Qur’an was telling the people to not commit fornication and adultery the people would have said ‘we’re never going to stop committing fornication and adultery!’ The first things that were revealed in the Qur’an were the Surah Al-Muddathir that talked about and mentioned hell fire and paradise. Until the hearts were attached to Allah SWT, THEN the orders for halal and haram came down.”

‘A`isha said that if you first tell people this is haram, that’s haram, they won’t listen to you. The first things that were revealed were about paradise and hell. When the hearts were attached to Allah the dos and don’ts were revealed.

We can tell from ‘A`isha that the way to attach the hearts to Allah is to remind ourselves about paradise and hell. We are immersed in this world too much and detached from reality. We are not getting enough dose of akhirah. Unless we remind ourselves of it constantly, it’s not going to be on our mind. We are very attached to the ones we love in this dunya, the things that we have and the pleasures this life can offer.

InshaAllah, we will do the descriptions of Hellfire & Paradise, as well as some of the actions that lead to both ends; also what to expect in both places including what your abodes (houses) will be like and what is there to eat and drink, to wear and to talk about…

Seerah 20: Post-Revelation Uncertainty

Seerah 20

Summary of Study Circle from 6 November 2016:

Post-Revelation Uncertainty

Aisha narrated "the Prophet* would dream as true as the Sun rose". That is his dreams would all come true. He mentioned this to Khadija and she said "this is a good sign from Allah" and this shows the wisdom of Khadija. Bukhari mentions this period of dreams lasted six full months. Hence, from Rabbi-Awal to Ramadan the Prophet* saw what happened the next day. In a hadith the Prophet* said "Nothing is left of prophethood except good dreams. And good dreams are 1/46th of prophethood". Prophethood lasted 23 years – so, as a fraction this is 0.5/23 = 1/46.

Aisha also narrates that the Prophet* ran back to Khadija, his heart was palpitating, sweaty and panicked. And he entered and said "cover me cover me". He was reassured by Khadija.

According to one book she went first to Adaas, a Christian slave who was a slave in Mecca, and asked him if he is familiar with what’s going on. And Adaas said "An angel of God in this place of Mecca?". Then she goes to Wariqah ibn Nawful - Khadija's older cousin. And he was one of the four hunafaa (one of the four who rejected idolatry); he was the eldest of the four and it’s recorded that he learned Hebrew scripture and became a Christian.

So Khadija asks Wariqah and he becomes eager and says "By God this is the same angel that came Musa". He then said "how I wish I was a young man when your nation ridicules, persecutes and expels you". When Wariqah said "expels" the Prophet* "my nation will expel me?!" Wariqah said "yes, never has any prophet been sent except that these things have happened".

And then Wariqah only lived a short time. We know the Prophet* said he saw Wariqah wearing white robes and blessed with gardens in Jannah. So he is surely one of the earliest converts to Islam. He is the first male sahabi and first to die as a Muslim in Islam.

Finally the Prophet* said "the revelation stopped for a while". Some scholars say up to six months and other narrations say that the Prophet* ‘feared for himself’ and even contemplated suicide during this uncertain silence.

And so the Prophet* resumed back to normal, but then "when I was walking, I heard a sound and looked up and saw the same angel that came to be on Hira. Sitting on a throne that was in the heavens and once again I trembled - and I rushed back again. Then the Prophet* began to tremble out of fear. One report says the Prophet* dropped onto his knees. So he rushes home again saying "Cover me, cover me" and this was when the second revelation were revealed.

Ways in which Revelation would came down to the Prophet

What exactly is revelation and how does it occur? It is a direct communication from Allah to mankind. Ibn Qayyim said the Prophet* was inspired by 7 different means:

1. True dreams - lowest form of inspiration is true dreams. This is the only form of inspiration still open to all of us and anyone can get this. The Prophet* saw these before his prophethood for 6 months and also afterwards. There are three types of dream:
a. From Allah - good and positive; could be visions of the future (i.e. like the Prophet* saw he was going to tawaaf); or symbolic dreams that you cannot interprate yourself; they never terrify you
b. From Shaytan - they terrify you (nightmares); we should not tell anybody of them
c. Our own dreams - our own imagination; the sign of this dream is that it vanishes from our memory.

2. Whispering / inspiration from the angels. Example is the mother of Musa being inspired by Allah "We inspire the mother of Musa". This type of inspiration happens to the extremely righteous people that Allah chooses. Similarly the mother of Isa. So this type of inspiration does not make you a prophet.

3. To see the angel in front of your directly, and to speak to him directly in human form. Sometimes the sahaba would see him, and sometimes they don't. Later (in Medina) when Jibraeel would come to him, he would come in the form of a sahabi called Dihya, an Ansari, who was considered to be the most handsome of all sahabi. Aisha once saw the Prophet* talking to Dihya and asked "what did he want" but the Prophet* said "that was Jibraeel".

4. More difficult inspiration - Jibraeel AS would communicate with the Prophet* and the Prophet* would go into a 'trance'. The world around him would become unknown. Aisha said "in this state, the Prophet* on a cold day would break into a sweat". In another hadith "when surah Ma'ida came down the Prophet* was sitting on a camel, and the surah was so heavy the camel had to sit down". As Allah says in the Qur’an "We will give you a heavy speech". In another hadith the Prophet* was resting on a sahaba and when wahi began the sahaba said he thought his thigh bone would crack. In a hadith the Prophet* said "sometimes Jibraeel AS comes to me in the form of a man, and sometimes he communicates with me and I hear a noise like the sound of a bell, and this is more difficult for me - and I understand what he tells me".

5. The Prophet* would see Jibraeel AS in his original angelic form which happened at least twice (first revelation and al-'Isra' wal-Mi'raj). All we know he was so big he blocked the horizon and he has 600 wings (the most number of wings of an angel).

6. Allah inspired / spoke to him directly without the intermediary of the angels.

7. The highest form - Allah's direct speech in His presence. This only happened once to the Prophet* in the journey of al-'Isra' wal-Mi'raj. Only once Allah spoke to him directly - Jibraeel was not there. So the Prophet* went to a place where he could hear the scribes writing. And was closer than two bows lengths. And he could see the hijab of Allah - the veil of light; and this was when Allah spoke to him directly. And certainly Allah preferred the Prophet* directly as he called the Prophet* to the seven heavens.

The Day of Judgment

Al-Hawd - The Cistern / Pool

Allah will honour His slave and Messenger Muhammad* in that great gathering by giving him a huge, vast cistern whose water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey, with a fragrance finer than musk. The vessels for drinking will be like the stars of the sky. This good water will come via 2 canals of gold & of silver from the river of Al-Kawthar, which Allah has given to His Messenger* in Paradise. The Ummah of the Chosen Prophet* will come to drink from it, and whoever would drink from it would never feel thirsty again.

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: "My cistern is (as big as) a month's journey, and its comers are like the same. Its water is whiter than milk and its fragrance is better than musk. Its drinking-vessels are like the stars of the sky. Whoever drinks from it will never feel thirsty again. " (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Final Gathering To The Place Of Eternal Abode: Paradise Or Hell

Every Nation Will Be Told To Follow That Which It Used To Worship

At the end of this Day, the people will be gathered either to Paradise or to Hell. These are the final places which people will reach. The Messenger* told us that at the end of that Day, each nation will be told to follow the god they used to worship. So those who used to worship the sun will follow the sun, and those who used to worship the moon will follow the moon. For those who used to worship idols, their gods will be made to appear before them and will walk before them and they will follow them. Those who used to worship Pharaoh will follow him. Then these false gods will all fall into the Fire, one after the other, and their worshippers will tumble into Hell after them.

As Allah says concerning Pharaoh: “He will go ahead of his people on the Day of Resurrection, and will lead them into the Fire, and evil indeed is the place to which they are led” (TMQ 11:98)

After that there will be no one left except the believers and a few of the People of the Book. Among the believers will be the hypocrites who were with them in this world.

Then the believers will follow their Lord. The Siraat will be set up, and the believers will be given their lights, and they will cross the Siraat. But the light of the hypocrites will be extinguished, and it will be said to them: 'Go back to your rear and seek a light! ' Then a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment. (TMQ 57:13)

As-Siraat

As-Safaareeni said: "In Arabic, the word Siraat means a clear path or way. In shari'ah, it means a bridge which will be set up over Hell, which the first and the last (of the people) will pass over. It is a bridge between Paradise and Hell. "

The believers will cross As-Siraat at speeds commensurate with their faith and righteous deeds. And Muslim narrated from Abu Zubayr, that he heard Jaabir ibn 'Abdullah being asked about the passing over Hell. He said:

"We will come on the Day of Resurrection like this, like this, - and look at that - above the people. And the nations will be called by their idols and that which they used to worship, one by one. Then our Lord will come to us and will say, 'Who are you waiting for?' They will say, 'We are waiting for our Lord. 'He will say, 'I am your Lord. 'They will say, 'Let us see You. 'Then He will manifest Himself to them, smiling. Then He will set out with them and they will follow Him. Each one among them, believer or hypocrite, will be given a light, then they will follow Him. On the bridge over Hell there will be hooks and spikes, which will catch whomever Allah wills. Then the light of the hypocrites will be extinguished, and the believers will be saved; the first group among them will have faces like the moon on the night when it is full, seventy thousand who will not be brought to account. Then those who will follow them will be like the light of the stars in the sky ... "

Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger* said, replying to the Sahaabah when they asked him whether they would see Allah:

"Do you have any doubt that you see the moon on the night when it is full and there are no clouds in front of it?" They said, "No, O' Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then you will see Him on the Day of Resurrection in the same way. Allah will gather the people and will say, 'Whoever used to worship anything, let him follow it. 'So all those who used to worship the sun, or the moon, or the false gods, will follow (their gods). Then this Ummah will be left, with its hypocrites among them. Then Allah will come to them in a Form other than that which they know, and He will say, 'I am your Lord. 'They will say, 'We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is where we will stay until our Lord comes to us. When our Lord comes to us, we will know Him. 'Then Allah will come to them in the form which they know, and He will say, 'I am your Lord. 'They will say, 'You are our Lord,' and they will follow Him, and the bridge will be set up over Hell. "

The Messenger of Allah* said: "I will be the first one who will cross it, and the prayer of the Messengers that Day will be, 'O' Allah, save, save ! ' On it will be spikes like the thorns of as-sa 'daan. Have you not seen the thorns of as-sa 'daan?" They said, "Yes indeed, O' Messenger of Allah." He said, "They are like the thorns of as-sa 'daan, but no one knows how huge they are except Allah. They will hit people according to their deeds: some will be doomed because of their deeds, and some will cut into pieces and will fall into Hell, then they will be saved ..”

Allah has told us about this scene, when the believers will cross as-Siraat. He says:
On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women - their light running forward before them and by their right hands. Glad tidings for you this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow [Paradise], to dwell therein forever! Truly, this is the great success! On the Day when the hypocrites men and women will say to the believers: 'Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!' It will be said: 'Go back to your rear! Then seek a light! 'So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment. [The hypocrites] will call the believers: 'Were we not with you?' The believers will reply: 'Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted [in Faith] and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allah came to pass. And the chief deceiver [Satan] deceived you in respect of Allah. ' So this Day no ransom shall be taken from you [hypocrites], nor of those who disbelieved. Your abode is the Fire. That is your mawla [friend - proper place], and worst indeed is that destination.') (TMQ 5 7: 12-15)

The Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet [Muhammad] and those who believe with him. Their Light will run forward before them and [with their Records Books of deeds] in their right hands. They will say: 'Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [to cross the Siraat] and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things.” (TMQ 66:8)
